what about juveniles and smaller adults?

what about juveniles and smaller adults?

All of our vests are cut large, to fit over a heavy shirt. Please measure carefully, and use the following table as a guide, for both men and women, as well as for juveniles and smaller adults.

MANY of our customers find they need a size smaller than usual. We urge you NOT to rely on your usual size, but to MEASURE YOURSELF, below the armpits at the LARGEST PART OF YOUR CHEST. (If you don't have a tape measure, just use a piece of string or an extension cord or a bathrobe sash. Then measure that with a ruler or yardstick.) Our sizes are Unisex.  Rely on the measurements, not your usual size; you'll notice that our own nominal sizes are larger than you'd expect.

For better fit, we have expanded the information on our sizing. For many customers, the first two columns ("Our size" and their chest measurement) are enough. But some people have more precise needs. We have added the actual interior chest and waist measures (circumference) for each size, and also the length (collar to tail hem, in back) for each size in each style of vest we sell.

Accuracy: like most garments, the exact measurements may vary from one sample to another. These measurements are within about 1" for our entire stock.

We recently added Juvenile/Smaller Adult sizes in our Sports and our new Mountaineer models. Same styles, but arm and neck openings are cut slightly smaller to fit a smaller person's frame. (Available color sets are different from those of the regular adult sizes.)

Comfortable fit: For any adult vest, we recommend 6-11" of overlap or slack between your chest measurement and the actual interior circumference of the vest. This leaves you with room for movement, for comfort, and for shirt and/or sweater. For juvenile sizes, we recommend 4-8" overlap. [* Exceptions: for the UltraLite model and our larger Commando Sweaters, see special note below the Chart.]

5. Which vests work best under different circumstances?

5. Which vests work best under different circumstances?

Cold Temperature: In cooler weather, the Convertible Travel Vest/Jacket is our warmest--with the sleeves zipped in. The Convertible, like our new Mountaineer Trail vest, zips up all the way to the collar. In addition, the Mountaineer has a hidden hood rolled inside the zipped collar. And if you're looking for a heavy, rugged, snug-fitting sweater to put on under your vest, take a look at our new Commando-style sweater, in black or military olive drab.

Hot Temperature: In the very hottest weather, we recommend our new Ultralite Travel Vest. Its upper half is nylon mesh, so it fully ventilates. The Safari model is also popular in hot weather, because it's all cotton and has a vented back.

Moisture: For canoeing or fishing, if you think it's likely that you'll get soaked, consider either the Ultralite or the Sports vest. Both are fast-drying, and the Ultralite won't absorb any water at all.

Travel Overseas: Our classic Safari model has the most pockets, and the widest variety of pockets. It's made of soft stone-washed cotton and will feel great even after a 13-hour flight. It comes to mid-hip and looks stylish. (Well, reasonably!) If you plan to travel widely on foot or on trains, the Convertible can allow you to pack one less garment. It's styled much like the Safari model (mid-hip length, with vented back and mesh back liner) but you can add the lined sleeves to make it into a comfortable jacket.

Activity: If you stand a good chance of taking a spill or falling out of a boat, both the Sports and the Ultralite have pockets that are 100% securable--either with zippers or hook/loop flaps. All of our models have pockets such as these, but the other models also have some slip-in pockets with open tops.

Seated position: If your pursuits or your circumstances require that you remain seated all or most of the time, we suggest one of our shorter-length styles, such as the Sports, the Ultralite, or the Mountaineer Trail vest. Whether you're on a bicycle, in a wheelchair, or on a horse or motorcycle; it's hard to dig into your jeans pockets. These styles keep everything above your waist.

6. How do you ship?

6. How do you ship?

We will attempt to ship your order withinin 1-2 business days. Standard shipping is free in the U.S.   For next-day delivery, we charge just $15 plus 15% of the vest price(s).

In most cases, we use Priority Mail for Regular shipping, so delivery takes 2-3 business days, and they do deliver on Saturdays in most places (unless the USPS changes its policies). If we need to do a factory dropship, we usually use UPS. (same charges for overnight shipping)

For overnight, we use either Express or Next-day delivery services, and we choose the carrier we think will get it there reliably--depending on time, day, season, and destination.
